Chris Rollyson, a Chicago-based marketing consultant focusing on technologies enabling disruptive change, presented a “101 LinkedIn for Business” seminar for about 20 members of SACC Chicago and the Danish-American Chamber of Commerce. The event, which was an initiative of Agneta Rosenberg, vice president of communications at SACC-Chicago was held on February 18th. Chris Rollyson, who developed the Executive Guide to LinkedIn provided a quick overview of Web 2.0 and social media technologies such as LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Slideshare, Myspace and Facebook. He said that LinkedIn provides business benefits if you understand how to use it properly. It can help you meet new people and stay in touch with a large number of business contacts you already know. It can be used effectively in any business function be it sales, recruiting, PR, services or R&D. Although most attendees use the free version, you need to upgrade to the paid version to really take advantage of the service. LinkedIn is according to him a global storefront in the Web 2.0 ecosystem. From a LinkedIn base, professionals might want to develop a blog to showcase their expertise. Next layer would be a more static web site, and on top and more selectively could be technologies such as videos and Facebook, which he referred to as the “exotics.” He suggests that we envision our community as either “tight” – only including a few key connections, or “loose” – including large number of connections. SACC Chicago is considering a follow-up seminar so that interested members and guests can develop usage of the service, as well as starting a SACC Chicago LinkedIn group.
