Summer 2008:
Swedish software rocks.
There are at least 500
Swedish software
companies, and half of
their sales are export
sales. Many were
nurtured by Swedish
multinationals, while
others were built by a
couple of guys with an
idea. Giants picked up
some, as when Ebay paid
$2.6 billion for Skype
(2005), IBM bought
Telelogic for $750 million
(2007) and Sun Micro-
systems forked over
$1 billion for MySQL (2007).
And a couple of years
ago EA scooped up
Digital Illusions (DICE)
for $23 million.
Others, like QlikTech,
remain independent
and head for Nasdaq.
