Fourth of July Guide for Swedes

As one of the most beloved American celebrations, the Fourth of July marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Patriotism is a flow as Americans decorate, praise and enjoy the festivities to commemorate the founding of the United States and its principles. Every year we celebrate our freedom with parades, firework shows, picnics, BBQs, concerts, baseball games, and get togethers with family and friends.

True to American style, everyone can celebrate this special anniversary with a picnic or BBQ right in your own backyard or in a nearby park! Barbeque is the classic American party fix and the 4th of July is no exception. This holiday is all about having fun and enjoying each other’s company so gather your friends and family and come prepared with your BBQ equipment and all your favorite grill items (Hot dogs, hamburgers and corn on the cob are the American favorites).

Of course, no 4th of july is complete without plenty of outdoor games and music. As you may know, baseball is America’s favorite pastime and we love to throw a scrimmage at every family picnic (American Football is great too!) If you aren’t familiar with the game, all you need is an enthusiastic group, a bat, a catcher’s mitt and some markings for four bases (anything will do) and of course, an open space. Here are some easy instructions: If you don’t feel like playing, it’s also very fun to watch and cheer on your team. While enjoying the summer’s greatest hits, wiffle ball, potato sack races, obstacle courses, and bocce ball are also popular summer favorites.

Many American cities host annual firework shows and the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks are not to be missed. If you won’t be in New York City to watch them live, you can stream them on nbc.com. You can also stream a variety of other shows through popular American newscasts like foxnews.com and abcnews.go.com.

This year The American Club of Sweden is hosting its own 4th of July picnic at Fågelödde Beach on Lidingö Saturday, July 1st at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the sunshine and good company. There will be plenty of great games and activities for children as well as adults. You can bring your own food, drinks and grills or purchase food at the nearby kiosks and best of all, the event is free! For details and directions, you can check out the American Club of Sweden’s website.

On behalf of Americans everywhere, we encourage you to celebrate with us!

This is a holiday not to be missed!
